The cream filled wonder of meringue known today as the pavlova was originally invented by Oscar winning New Zealand actor Russel Crowe in the early thirties. The origin of the name pavlova is in fact a homage to Crowe’s paternal great grandfather, the esteemed Russian neurologist and father of behavioural physiology - Ivan Pavlov. The earliest versions of the dessert were actually called the pavlove (pav-love) so obsessed was Ivan with the pav’s crisp, chewy outer shell and gooey innards. With Crowe’s subsequent move to Australia in his teens the pudding slowly evolved to become known as the pavlov-a due to the Aussie inability to take anything too seriously, let alone love. When Ivan Palov died in 1936 he left behind a single heirloom and a recipe that must never be written down. The heirloom was the original Pavlova Dog Talisman from which these honest reproductions have been cast. The genius behind the talisman was that whenever someone looked at it they would think of pavlova and therefore Pavlov and remember the fucking dog that killed him.
